Redfish was a Balao-class submarine, SS-395, the first ship of the name. Portsmouth Navy Yard laid her down on 9 September 1943, launched her on 27 January 1944, and the Navy commissioned her on 12 April 1944. Louis D. McGregor had her from that day. She reached Pearl Harbor on 27 June.
On the night of 8 and 9 December 1944 she and the submarine Sea Devil damaged a Japanese carrier. The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships calls that ship Hayataka. She is the carrier Junyo. The damage is not credited to one boat.
On 19 December, in the East China Sea, she met the new carrier Unryu. The Naval History and Heritage Command's account says McGregor fired six bow torpedoes, that one hit under the island, and that Unryu sank with guns still firing. The same account notes a Navy Cross for McGregor for that sinking.
She reached Portsmouth for repairs on 17 February 1945 and was back at Pearl Harbor on 23 July. She was still there when the war ended. She was decommissioned at San Diego on 27 June 1968, struck on 30 June, and later sunk as a target.
