USS S-44 (SS-155) was an S-class submarine of the United States Navy. In August 1942 she sank Kako by torpedo. In October 1943 an escort sank her in the Kuril Islands.

The battle named with that first sinking is the Battle of Savo Island, on 9 August 1942. She was not in the night fight. Her blow came the next morning.

On 10 August 1942, the day after the battle, S-44 torpedoed Kako about seventy miles short of Kavieng and sank her. The battle credits her with Kako's loss on the day following the night action.

The attack lay about seventy miles short of Kavieng. There, on the morning of 10 August 1942, Kako went down to a torpedo from S-44, the morning after Savo Island.

On 7 October 1943 the escort Ishigaki sank S-44 off Paramushiro, in the Kuril Islands. The submarine went down there.
