Sandoval (APA-194) served as an attack transport of the Haskell class built by Kaiser at Vancouver. She was launched on 2 September 1944 and commissioned on 7 October 1944. The boats on her davits were there to carry troops the last stretch to a beach.
Morning on 19 February 1945 brought her off Iwo Jima. The men she sent onto Red Beach were the 3d Battalion of the 27th Marines, from the 5th Marine Division.
Mortars from shore hit several landing craft. Injuries to the boat crews stayed minor. Before that afternoon was over, the regiment was holding the cliffs above the western beaches.
She closed in a second time, taking wounded off the beach and landing cargo the shore still needed. After 1800 she drew away.
Sandoval survived the war. Two battle stars were entered on her wartime record.
