She was commissioned as Midway. On 10 October 1944 she was renamed St. Lo, CVE-63, so the name Midway could go to a larger carrier. She was a Casablanca-class escort carrier. Captain Francis J. McKenna had her.
On the morning of 25 October 1944 she was one of Sprague's six carriers off Samar. The Japanese battle line did not sink her. She got clear of the guns.
Later that morning a kamikaze hit the flight deck. The bombs went down into the hangar. She burned and sank. She was the first American ship sunk by a kamikaze crash. That was not Kurita's battleships.
