Wayne (APA-54) served as an attack transport of the Sumter class. Bethlehem at Sparrows Point launched her on 6 December 1942, and she was commissioned on 27 August 1943.

On 30 January 1944 she lay off Kwajalein, serving the northern landing force. She shifted her Marines onto LSTs, and those ships took the men into the lagoon. Next morning she was back in the transport area, put boats in the water, and sent cargo ashore. During the afternoon on 1 February she quit the Marshalls.

On 9 January 1945 she put her embarked troops into the assault at Lingayen and stayed in the transport area through that evening. In her reckoning, the day was assault landing number five.

On 1 April 1945, Easter morning, troops from Wayne went onto Okinawa. They used a small beach set below the high ground. A reef sheltered that beach. Seven battle stars stand on her wartime record. She was decommissioned on 16 March 1946.
