Loss of Shinano
Off Japan, early on 29 November 1944
On the evening of 28 November 1944 Archerfish, on lifeguard duty for a strike that had been called off, sighted a large carrier leaving Tokyo Bay with four escorts. She chased on the surface for about six and a half hours, got ahead, and fired six torpedoes. Shinano sank early on 29 November, ten days after she was commissioned. Her captain was among the dead. Four hits are the number carried against her. The escorts are not named on this page. They were not sunk. Shinano was the largest warship sunk by a submarine. The sinking is credited to Archerfish.
