Ships

Albert Kellogg Morehouse was born on 29 April 1900 and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1922.

As a captain he commanded the escort carrier Natoma Bay (CVE-62) in the Philippine campaign. During the Battle off Samar on 25 October 1944, Natoma Bay was one of three groups of escort carriers that came under attack by a Japanese force of battleships, cruisers and destroyers. Morehouse directed his ship and its air department through the action and received the Navy Cross. He also received the Legion of Merit with Combat "V" for commanding Natoma Bay in support of the landings at Leyte, Mindoro, Lingayen Gulf and Zambales between 12 October 1944 and 5 February 1945.

By the start of the Korean War he was a rear admiral and Chief of Staff to Commander Naval Forces, Far East. From 25 June 1950 to 1 January 1951 he coordinated the expanding naval effort in Korean waters and made frequent visits to combat units, for which he received a second Legion of Merit.

He retired as a rear admiral and died on 18 December 1955.

Legacy

He is remembered for his conduct at Samar, one of the most celebrated escort-carrier actions of the war, and for organizing the Far East naval staff in the opening months of the Korean War.
