Charles Henry Stedman, a lieutenant (junior grade), is listed by NavSource as commanding officer of Vireo from 2 November 1942. NavSource gives him no end date. The next officer, Lieutenant (junior grade) Robert Wilson Ekberg, begins on 31 July 1943. That next start is used as the relief, and it is the NavSource sequence, not a date printed on Stedman's own line.

Birth, home, and family were not found.

No academy class and no earlier ship are on the line. He followed Lieutenant James Claude Legg, whose own line also lacks an end date.

Vireo had come back to Espiritu Santo on 23 October 1942 under tow, after Meredith had taken off her crew and had then been sunk, and after a salvage party had found the tug derelict on 21 October. If the sequence is right, Stedman took her ten days later, with the new crew her history says replaced most of the men lost in that ordeal. The history does not say he was the officer who formed that crew. On 3 December, with the tender Hilo and with PT boats in tow, she left Noumea, reached Cairns on 9 December, and stayed in Australia through New Year's Day. She was back at Espiritu Santo on 9 January 1943. Early that month she assisted the cruisers Pensacola and Minneapolis while they were repaired after Tassafaronga. She kept towing barges and serving as a target for destroyers off Guadalcanal. On 7 April, in the air attack on Lunga Roads, she and Ortolan took the damaged destroyer Aaron Ward in tow. Aaron Ward sank three miles short of Tulagi. On 13 July, after the Battle of Kula Gulf, Vireo and Rail went out for the damaged cruisers, and Vireo towed Honolulu to the government wharf at Tulagi. His sequence-dated relief is 31 July 1943, eighteen days after that tow.

No later command or date of death was found.
