Robert Wilson Ekberg, a lieutenant (junior grade), is listed by NavSource in command of Vireo from 31 July 1943, with no end date on his line. The next officer, Lieutenant (junior grade) Steuart Delamater, begins on 19 May 1944. That next start is used as the relief because it is the NavSource sequence.

Birth, home, and family were not found.

No academy class and no earlier ship are on the line. He followed Charles Henry Stedman.

After the tow of Honolulu to Tulagi on 13 July 1943, Vireo's history keeps her at harbor work and local escort from Tulagi, Espiritu Santo, or Noumea for the rest of 1943 and into 1944, following the fleet's advance through islands already taken. The history calls the duty dull and necessary. It does not name Ekberg in a particular salvage or tow. On 15 May 1944, four days before the next officer's start, she was reclassified an old ocean-going tug, ATO-144 in the ship's history and AT(O)-144 on NavSource. The Cape Sansapor landings at the end of July were after his tour, if the sequence date is right.

No later command or date of death was found.
