- USS Grebe (AM-43) Lieutenant, 1 October 1942 – 6 December 1942 · NavSource ends the tour on the day she grounded at Vuata Vatoa
Charles McMaster Lewis, a lieutenant in the United States Navy, commanded Grebe from 1 October 1942 to 6 December 1942. NavSource is the source for the name, the rank, and both dates. The end date is the day she grounded.
Birth, home, and family were not found.
No academy class and no earlier ship appear on the NavSource line. He relieved Ensign William Lewis Sloan.
Nine days after he took command, on 9 November 1942, Grebe left with the covered lighters YC-737 and YB-9 in tow, in company with the yard oiler YO-44, for Canton Island. She called there on 25 November and reached Pago Pago, Samoa, on 28 November. On 6 December 1942 she grounded while trying to float the steamer Thomas A. Edison at Vuata Vatoa, in the Fiji Islands. NavSource spells the island Vuanta Vatoa. The 2007 ship's history says salvage was broken up by a hurricane that destroyed both ships on 1 and 2 January 1943. Her name was struck from the Navy list on 28 July 1943. NavSource says she was decommissioned and struck on that day. The history does not say whether Lewis was still aboard after the grounding, or whether he was hurt. The commanding-officer list simply ends his tour on the day she went ashore. She earned one battle star for the war. The history does not divide that star among her captains.
No later command, promotion, or date of death was found. The ship did not go back to sea.
