- USS Grebe (AM-43) Ensign, 1 September 1942 – 1 October 1942
William Lewis Sloan, an ensign in the United States Navy, commanded Grebe from 1 September 1942 to 1 October 1942. NavSource is the source for the name, the rank, and both dates. A one-month command is all that list records for him.
Birth, home, and family were not found.
No academy class and no earlier ship appear on the NavSource line. He relieved Lieutenant Harold Stanley Bogan.
His month falls in the gap the ship's history leaves between her return to Honolulu in February 1942 and the Johnston Island convoy of 30 September 1942. That convoy sailed on the day before his tour ended, or on the last day of it, depending on how the dates are read: the history says she joined the convoy on 30 September and returned on 9 October, and NavSource ends Sloan on 1 October. The history does not name the commanding officer of the convoy trip. Nothing in either source says what he did on board during the thirty days, or whether the ship was at Pearl Harbor the whole time.
No later command was found. Lieutenant Charles McMaster Lewis's tour begins on 1 October 1942.
