- USS Crossbill (AMc-9) Lieutenant (junior grade), 16 October 1942 – 3 September 1943 · The next name in the DANFS officer roster begins on 3 September 1943, and that date is used as the relief
Chester M. Sturgeon, a lieutenant (junior grade) in the Naval Reserve, is the second name in the officer roster of the coastal minesweeper Crossbill. The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships entry, by Thomas Sheppard and dated 7 September 2017, gives him as Lt. (j.g.) Chester M. Sturgeon, USNR, from 16 October 1942. The next name is Lieutenant (junior grade) Edward J. Foley, Jr., USNR, on 3 September 1943. The roster prints only the day each man assumed charge. Foley's date is used here as the end of Sturgeon's tour.
Birth, home, and family were not in the entry.
No academy class and no earlier ship appear on the line. He followed Lieutenant (junior grade) Robert W. Costello, who had been officer in charge since the ship was placed in service on 21 March 1941.
Crossbill spent the war in Hawaiian waters, rotating among Pearl Harbor, Bishops Point, and Honolulu on Oahu, and Port Allen on Kauai, with the drills that go with a small sweeper and with shore leave. The entry describes that duty for the ship as a whole. It does not say what changed, if anything, when Sturgeon took her on 16 October 1942, and it does not describe a single day inside his months by name. The search with Vireo on 23 and 24 April 1942 falls before his date. The burglary warrant of 1 September 1945 falls after the next officer's date. Between those markers the history is silent about him.
No later command, promotion, or date of death was found.
