Edward J. Foley, Jr., a lieutenant (junior grade) in the Naval Reserve, is the third name in the officer roster of the coastal minesweeper Crossbill. The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships entry, by Thomas Sheppard and dated 7 September 2017, gives him as Lt. (j.g.) Edward J. Foley Jr., USNR, from 3 September 1943. The next name is Ensign William T. Reilly, USNR, on 20 May 1944. The roster prints only the day each man assumed charge. Reilly's date is used here as the end of Foley's tour.

James Louis Foley, Naval Academy class of 1929, commanded the minesweeper Bobolink on 7 December 1941 and later the destroyer Hyman. The Crossbill roster styles this officer Edward J. Foley, Jr., USNR, and gives no academy class. The names, the reserve status, and the missing academy class keep the two men apart.

Birth, home, and family were not in the entry. The "Jr." is printed. His father's name is not.

No academy class and no earlier ship appear on the line. He followed Lieutenant (junior grade) Chester M. Sturgeon.

From 3 September 1943 to 20 May 1944 Crossbill was still a Fourteenth Naval District sweeper in Hawaiian waters. The entry describes the rotation among Pearl Harbor, Bishops Point, Honolulu, and Port Allen, and the ordinary drills, for the whole war. It does not isolate these eight months, and it does not say where Foley was on any day of them. No action, no citation, and no letter of his was in the entry.

No later command, promotion, or date of death was found.
