Lieutenant Clark W. Faulkner had PT-40 on 10 January 1943. The Navy Cross later awarded to him counts that night with the night he had PT-124.

On 1 February 1943 he had PT-124, about three miles south of Savo, with the boats sent against the destroyers taking the last men off Guadalcanal. He fired three torpedoes at Makigumo. They missed. While that destroyer turned away she struck a mine, and Yugumo scuttled her before dawn. The boat reported hits. The Japanese record of that night is a miss, a mine, and one torpedo from Yugumo. The sinking is not this boat's.
