Clayton Shadek Isgrig was born in Michigan on 6 July 1896 and served as an officer of the United States Navy. He was a lieutenant commander when he received command of a destroyer, was promoted to commander on 1 July 1940, and held the temporary rank of captain from 20 June 1942. He died on 28 October 1980 in Clairemont, in San Diego County, California, at the age of eighty-four.

On 30 April 1938 he assumed command of the destroyer Preston (DD-379), relieving Charles Davis Swain. Preston was a Mahan-class ship built at the Mare Island Navy Yard and commissioned in October 1936. During his tour she served with the Battle Force in the Pacific, in the squadron exercises that occupied the fleet in the last years of peace. His command ended on 1 July 1939.

Preston remained in the Pacific. Timothy Joseph O.'Brien commanded her in the year before the war, and Max Clifford Stormes had her from the autumn of 1941. On the night of 14 November 1942, in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, gunfire sank Preston south of Savo Island. Stormes and more than a hundred of her crew were lost with the ship.

In the middle of 1940 he took the fleet oiler Brazos (AO-4). Her work was to fuel other ships of the fleet. He left her on 24 February 1941. His promotion to commander fell on 1 July 1940, during the period of that command.

With the temporary rank of captain he became commanding officer of the submarine tender Orion (AS-18) on 30 September 1943 and remained until 10 July 1944. A tender of that kind repaired and supplied submarines then on patrol across the Pacific. His commands ran from a peacetime destroyer in 1938 and 1939 to an oiler and a submarine tender in the war years.
