- USS Tucson (CL-98) Captain from 30 July 1947 · Relieved in 1948
Donald Fitzroy McLean had the light cruiser Tucson (CL-98) from 30 July 1947 until sometime in 1948. NavSource gives the end only as the year. He is listed as a captain, and the final-rank column is blank. He is not the E. R. McLean or the John Boyd McLean already in the captain index.
Uboat.net gives his birth as 4 January 1901 and no birthplace. No death date was found on a page that named this officer.
Uboat.net says he was in the Naval Academy class of 1924. It dates lieutenant commander from 1 October 1938, temporary commander from 17 July 1942, and temporary captain from 1 June 1943. The one command it lists is the destroyer-minelayer Montgomery (DM-17), as lieutenant commander, from 25 September 1939 to 2 April 1941, citing a NavSource page. It says it has no further career.
He was not her wartime captain. Captain Arthur DeLancey Ayrault had her from commissioning on 3 February 1945 through November 1946, and Captain Elmer Paul Abernethy had her from that November until 30 July 1947. She had sailed from the west coast on 28 July 1947, two days before McLean's date, and DANFS has her at Yokosuka on 15 August, then for two months in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, with two visits to Shanghai and one to Tsingtao, and back at San Diego on 6 November. DANFS does not name him. His relief falls somewhere in 1948, while she was on west coast duty after that return.
Captain Stephen George Barchet is the next name on the list, from 1948 until the decommissioning on 11 June 1949. Nothing after 1948 was fetched for McLean.
