- USS Duluth (CL-87) Captain from 18 September 1944 · Relieved on 21 September 1945
Donald Roderick Osborn, Jr., commanded Duluth (CL-87) from her commissioning on 18 September 1944 until 21 September 1945. NavSource lists him as a captain, class of 1920, and gives no later rank. Uboat.net heads the same name as USNA 1919, born 1 June 1898, with no birthplace and no death.
The birth date is uboat.net. That page leaves the place blank and does not name a family.
NavSource prints his class as 1920. Uboat.net prints USNA 1919. Neither page gives a day of graduation or a first ship, so both class years are left standing. Uboat.net lists him as a commander from 1 July 1939 and as a temporary captain from 18 June 1942.
DANFS puts Captain D. R. Osborn, Jr., in command at the commissioning on 18 September 1944. Uboat.net starts him that day as a temporary captain and gives no end date. NavSource relieves him on 21 September 1945. Under him Duluth trained at Newport, crossed to Pearl Harbor in April 1945, joined the fast carriers on 27 May, and was sent back to Guam after the typhoon of 5 June damaged her bow. She was with Task Force 38 again from 21 July for the last strikes on Japan. The uboat.net page says it has no career narrative and no other command for him.
NavSource ends the tour on 21 September 1945, five days after she had entered Tokyo Bay, and names Captain Samuel Walter DuBois next. No later duty, retirement, or death was fetched.
