- USS Flint (CL-97) Captain from 5 October 1945 · Relieved on 23 March 1946
Elwood Dixon Poole had the light cruiser Flint (CL-97) from 5 October 1945 until 23 March 1946. The fighting was over. He brought her home with discharged servicemen and left her at Bremerton. NavSource lists him as a captain, class of 1921B, and gives no higher final rank.
Uboat.net and Find a Grave agree on the dates and places. He was born on 5 July 1897 at Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio, and he died on 31 July 1977 at Seattle, King County, Washington, aged 80. Find a Grave memorial 49299758 records burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Uboat.net styles him Elwood Dixon Poole, Sr.
NavSource's class column reads 1921B. The saved pages do not say where he was appointed or when he was commissioned ensign. Uboat.net dates lieutenant commander from 1 November 1936, commander from 1 July 1941, and temporary captain from 20 June 1942.
He was not her captain during the Pacific campaign. Uboat.net lists one wartime command it could date: the destroyer tender Altair (AD-11), as temporary captain, from 15 August 1943 to 8 August 1944. It does not list Flint, and it says it has no further career. Captain Charles Raymond Will had Flint from commissioning through the surrender and was relieved on 5 October 1945. DANFS then has the ship on a voyage from Japan to Eniwetok, loading servicemen at Yokosuka on 13 October, entering San Francisco Bay on 28 November, sailing to Kwajalein for more men, and reporting at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on 11 January 1946. Those movements fall inside Poole's dates. DANFS does not name him.
Commander Willis Ormond Johnson relieved him on 23 March 1946. Flint was placed out of commission at Bremerton on 6 May 1947, after Poole had left. The next date fetched for him is his death at Seattle on 31 July 1977.
