Johannes Jacobus Lukas Willinge recommissioned Sumatra at Soerabaja on 27 January 1942 and had her until 17 February 1943. The Dutch history calls him Commander J. J. L. Willinge. Uboat.net lists him as kapitein-luitenant ter zee, which it glosses as commander. The English rank Commander comes from that gloss and from the Dutch history. He was later a vice-admiral. The rank in this record is the rank he held in the ship.

Uboat.net records that he was born on 15 April 1898 at Den Helder. The page gives no date of death.

The rank table lists luitenant ter zee der 3e klasse, glossed sub-lieutenant, on 5 October 1918; luitenant ter zee der 2e klasse, glossed lieutenant, on 5 October 1920; luitenant ter zee der 1e klasse, glossed lieutenant-commander, on 14 December 1928; and kapitein-luitenant ter zee, glossed commander, on 1 April 1940. Kapitein ter zee, glossed captain, is dated 1 May 1944, after he had left Sumatra. Schout-bij-nacht, glossed rear-admiral, is dated 1 May 1947, and vice-admiraal 15 May 1950. He retired on 1 September 1951. The page says it has no career narrative.

The Dutch history says that on 27 January 1942 she was not ready for battle, was manned mainly with midshipmen, could do 15 knots, and was ordered to Colombo. She reached Trincomalee on 15 February, joined the 5th Cruiser Squadron, and on 16 April left for Portsmouth by way of Bombay. She arrived on 31 October and was laid up on 6 November. An uboat.net event places her at Pointe Noire on 18 September 1942, with Decoy and Griffin, and another has her leaving Freetown on 28 September with HMAS Quiberon. He left on 17 February 1943, when Izaac Willem Reijnierse took the laid-up ship.

The flag ranks and the retirement of 1 September 1951 are on the uboat.net rank table. The page does not say what appointments went with them, and it does not give a death.
