Commander Joseph Thomas Lawler was a U.S. Naval Reserve officer (NavSource lists 1939). He commanded USS Cape Esperance (CVE-88) from 10 May 1946 to 22 August 1946. He commanded USS Bougainville (CVE-100) from 14 September 1946 to 30 November 1946. NavSource records that he later reached the rank of captain.
