Joseph Wesley Gregory had the light cruiser Trenton (CL-11) from 25 May 1942. NavSource ends the tour only as 1943. DANFS and uboat.net both relieve him on 26 June 1943, when Captain Stanley C. Norton took the ship. In those months she was on the Southeast Pacific patrol between the Panama Canal and the Strait of Magellan. The records fetched for him are thin beside the ship's history.

Uboat.net gives his birth as 3 March 1895 and his death as 3 June 1977, and does not give a place for either. It lists him as Naval Academy class of 1917.

The pages fetched here do not give his duty between graduation and 1940. Uboat.net lists him as a commander from 30 June 1937, a temporary captain from 1 January 1942, and a captain from 30 June 1942.

Uboat.net gives him Kaskaskia (AO-27) as a commander from 29 October 1940 to 9 June 1941, and the submarine tender Holland (AS-3) from 9 July 1941 to 5 April 1942. He took Trenton on 25 May 1942 as a temporary captain, on that site's dates, and left her on 26 June 1943. NavSource ranks him captain and does not give the day he was relieved. DANFS calls him Capt. Joseph W. Gregory and dates the relief to the day Norton assumed command. DANFS, which does not narrate him by name in the ship's movements, has Trenton on the west coast of South America for that whole stretch.

The Hall of Valor says he retired as a rear admiral. It lists a Legion of Merit and states that a citation was needed. No citation text is on the page, and the award is not treated here as established. Uboat.net's death date is 3 June 1977. No place of death was in the pages fetched.
