Marshall Edgar Dornin graduated from the Naval Academy in 1930. The Lucky Bag lists him from San Francisco and calls him Mush and Slim. A San Francisco notice of his death says he was born in Berkeley. Aboard Abbot the crew called him Skinny. The face is the midshipman in that yearbook.

He reported aboard on 10 August 1943. On 13 August he relieved Chester Edward Carroll as a lieutenant commander. He was promoted to commander on 1 September 1943. On 14 August 1944 he turned the ship over to Francis Walford Ingling.

He later became a rear admiral. The Chronicle notice of 26 January 1994 gives his age as eighty-six and names the Bronze Star and three Legions of Merit. It also says he had been superintendent of the Naval Postgraduate School.
