- USS Atlanta (CL-104) Captain from 4 August 1946 · Relieved on 22 June 1947
Peter Michael Moncy commanded Atlanta (CL-104) from 4 August 1946 to 22 June 1947. NavSource lists him as a captain of the Naval Academy class of 1921B whose final rank was rear admiral. The Hall of Valor prints the name as Peter Moncy (Moncewicz), class of 1921, retired as a rear admiral.
The Hall of Valor gives his birth as 2 June 1898 and his death as 4 May 1978. It gives no birthplace, no death place, and no burial.
The same page says he graduated from the Naval Academy in the class of 1921. NavSource prints the class as 1921B. Nothing fetched lists a ship before Laramie.
On 28 August 1942, as a commander, he was commanding officer of the fleet oiler Laramie (AO-16) in the Atlantic when the ship was attacked and damaged. The Navy Cross citation says he ordered all hands to battle stations the instant he saw the attack was imminent, maneuvered clear of the formation, directed the damage-control work on list and trim, left the area of the attack, and brought the ship into port. The citation is printed from Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 313 of April 1943. It does not mention Atlanta (CL-104). The Hall of Valor gives no other award.
NavSource gives him Atlanta (CL-104) as a captain from 4 August 1946 to 22 June 1947. He relieved Captain Walfrid Nyquist during the San Francisco overhaul. The ship finished trials out of San Diego, maneuvered off Hawaii, and on 1 May 1947 sailed from Pearl Harbor with Task Force 38 for Australia. He was relieved on 22 June 1947, before she anchored at San Pedro on 28 July. The Hall of Valor says he retired as a rear admiral and does not date the retirement.
