Walfrid Nyquist commanded Atlanta (CL-104) from 22 September 1945 to 4 August 1946, after the fighting had ended. NavSource lists him as a captain of the Naval Academy class of 1921B whose final rank was rear admiral. Uboat.net gives the same class and the same command dates.

Uboat.net says he was born on 6 May 1899 in LeRay Township, Minnesota, and died on 24 June 1975 in Santa Clara, California, at 76.

That page dates him as a lieutenant commander from 1 December 1936, a commander from 1 July 1941, and a temporary captain from 20 June 1942. It prints no decorations. His listed wartime command is the destroyer Hull (DD-350), as a lieutenant commander, from 7 June 1940 to 10 August 1941. The page says it has no further career information.

He left Hull in August 1941, before the United States entered the war. Nothing fetched places him in a named 1942, 1943, or 1944 action. His next listed command is Atlanta (CL-104), as a temporary captain, from 22 September 1945 to 4 August 1946. He relieved Captain Bayard Henry Colyear in Tokyo Bay. The ship then carried more than 500 passengers to Seattle, went through the Terminal Island overhaul, and spent the first half of 1946 among Far Eastern ports before returning to San Pedro in June and entering the San Francisco Naval Shipyard.

Captain Peter Michael Moncy relieved him on 4 August 1946, during that overhaul. NavSource's final rank for him is rear admiral. No fetched page dates the promotion or names a later command.
