Phillip Leonard Gunn, acting captain, had HMNZS Achilles from 19 May 1943 until 10 September 1943. She was in Portsmouth Dockyard for the whole of that time, under repair and rearming after the Guadalcanal damage and then after the fuel-tank explosion of 22 June 1943. He did not take her to sea.

Uboat.net gives his birth as 5 April 1895 and no place, and no death.

The rank line is mate on 22 June 1918, lieutenant on 22 October 1920, lieutenant-commander on 22 October 1928, and commander on 30 June 1933. The step to acting captain is undated on the page. He is shown as retired on 5 April 1945, his fiftieth birthday. A Navy Distinguished Service Medal is dated 21 January 1916. The page says it has no career narrative, and it does not say where he earned the medal. The name is spelled Phillip on the page, and that spelling is kept.

The only wartime command uboat.net lists for him is Achilles, 19 May to 10 September 1943. Captain Neville Brevoort Carey Brock relieved him. Gunn's retirement date falls after that, and after Achilles had already been commissioned again under Francis John Butler.

Nothing after the retirement date of 5 April 1945 was on the page.
