- USS Turkey (AM-13) Lieutenant, 21 April 1943 – 1 September 1943
Samuel Burl Neff, a lieutenant in the United States Navy, commanded Turkey from 21 April 1943 to 1 September 1943. NavSource is the source for the name, the rank, and both dates. Nothing else about him was found there.
Birth, home, and family were not found.
No academy class and no earlier ship appear on the NavSource line. He relieved Lieutenant Commander Thompson Fletcher Fowler.
He took command on the day Turkey's history says a repair period began, 21 April 1943, after she had found two castaways at Bowditch Island on 14 April. The repairs ran through 30 April. She then became station ship at Tutuila. In June she returned to Pearl Harbor and went on to a major overhaul at Mare Island. NavSource ends his tour on 1 September 1943, before the ship's history has her back at Pearl Harbor on 20 October. The target-towing that followed that return belongs to the next captain, Lieutenant Richard Johnston Melchor. Neff's own movements during the yard period are not described. The ship's history does not say he remained aboard at Mare Island or that he left her there.
No later command, promotion, or date of death was found.
