- USS Langley (CV-1) Captain from 13 December 1933 · Relieved on 15 June 1935
Source-limited.
Warren Gerald Child was born in 1883. He graduated from the Naval Academy (NavSource and the live page say Class of 1907; Weber State University's archive record says 1906). Archival descriptions say he served in submarines and in naval aviation, a rare pairing in a career that covered the early years of both.
He commanded Langley (CV-1) from 13 December 1933 to 15 June 1935. He took over from Kenneth Whiting and handed over to John H. Hoover. By then Langley was the oldest and smallest carrier in the fleet. She had been overtaken by Lexington, Saratoga and Ranger, and would soon become a seaplane tender.
He died in 1938. His papers (1907–1942) are held in a manuscript collection listed in SNAC and the Library of Congress finding aids.
Flag: USNA class year, 1907 (NavSource) or 1906 (Weber State).
