Lexington-class carrier, converted from a battlecruiser. Commissioned 16 November 1927. On 24 August 1942, at the Eastern Solomons, aircraft from her hit the light carrier Ryujo, which sank that afternoon. That sinking is not credited to one ship. In 1944 she struck Wotje and Taroa, then covered Eniwetok until 28 February. On 21 February 1945, off Iwo Jima, six planes scored five hits in three minutes and another bomb hit her at 1900. She lost 123 dead or missing and did not return to combat. The underwater atomic test at Bikini sank her on 25 July 1946.
