Taken · damagedfrom Japanese dive bombers
About 24 dive bombers attacked Enterprise from about 1105 to 1109. One bomb pierced the flight deck near the bow and exploded in the water. One hit the flight deck abaft the forward elevator. One burst near frame 129 to starboard and opened a seam in the side plating. ONI summarizes it as two bomb hits. At 1220 a near-miss damaged the ship about 15 feet below the waterline. DANFS gives 44 killed and 75 wounded.
Taken · missedfrom Japanese torpedo planes
About 1135 a torpedo attack came in. ONI says the estimates run from 14 planes to 30. About nine torpedoes were dropped from 1,000 to 2,000 yards. Enterprise avoided all of them. One plane crashed on Smith instead.
