Hyuga was an Ise-class battleship. Mitsubishi at Nagasaki launched her on 27 January 1917, and she was completed on 30 April 1918. After Midway the after turrets came off and a short flight deck went on in their place. She was still a battleship that could carry aircraft. She was not a fleet carrier.

On 25 October 1944 she was in Ozawa's Northern Force off Cape Engaño, with her sister Ise. Rear Admiral Chiaki Matsuda had Carrier Division 4. He was not her captain. Neither battleship had aircraft aboard. American carrier planes were overhead for hours. Near misses did not stop her. She got away. Zuikaku, Zuiho, Chitose, and Chiyoda did not.

Carrier aircraft sank her at Kure on 27 July 1945. That loss is not credited to one plane.
