I-168 was a submarine of the Imperial Japanese Navy. What is recorded of her in the Pacific War is the work she did after the carrier battle at Midway, and the afternoon the submarine Scamp sank her in the Steffen Strait.
Otoji Nakamura took command on 25 July 1941. Yahachi Tanabe relieved him on 31 January 1942 and was her captain at Midway.
The Battle of Midway is dated 4 June 1942. I-168 had no part in the air battle. On 6 June she torpedoed Hammann and the abandoned Yorktown. Hammann sank at once. Yorktown stayed up through the night and went down the next morning, 7 June, finished by the same submarine's torpedoes.
Kinzo Tonozuka became captain on 30 June 1942. Katsuji Watanabe followed on 31 August 1942, and Sakae Nakajima took command on 15 October 1942. Nakajima was still in command when she was lost.
On 27 July 1943 the submarine Scamp sank I-168 in the Steffen Strait, near New Hanover. The boat that had put Hammann down at once and finished the abandoned Yorktown the next morning was herself sunk there.
