USS Russell (DD-414) was a Sims-class destroyer of the United States Navy. She survived the war and was still afloat at the surrender.
James Carter Pollock was captain from 3 November 1939 until 12 July 1941. Glenn Roy Hartwig relieved him that day and remained in command until 14 January 1943, a tenure that covered both of the carrier actions set down for this ship.
On 8 May 1942, in the Battle of the Coral Sea, Russell was in the screen of the carrier Yorktown. She was not sunk.
On 4 June 1942, at the Battle of Midway, she was again in Yorktown’s screen. She screened the carrier there and was not sunk. Russell came through Midway afloat.
Warren Howard McClain commanded from 14 January 1943 until 11 December 1943. Frederick Evans Moore held the ship from 11 December 1943 to 14 December 1943. Lewis Robinson Miller then served as captain from 14 December 1943 until 14 August 1944.
John Edward Wicks took command on 14 August 1944 and served until 15 September 1945, so his tour ran through the surrender, when Russell was still afloat. The name was later given to another destroyer, USS Russell (DDG-59), a separate hull.
