Kumano was a Mogami-class heavy cruiser, sister of Suzuya, Mikuma, and Mogami. At Midway she was in Kurita's support force. She was not sunk there. After Mogami rammed Mikuma, that cruiser was finished by carrier aircraft. Kumano was not the ship that sank her.
On 25 October 1944 she was off Samar in Cruiser Division 7. The usual account is that one torpedo from Johnston tore her bow off. She left the fight. She was not sunk that day.
Aircraft sank her in Dasol Bay on 25 November 1944. Not credited to one plane.
