Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita had his flag in the heavy cruiser Kumano in June 1942, with the support force at Midway. That force was not sunk there. On 5 June the submarine Tambor sighted the cruisers. They turned, Mogami collided with Mikuma, and aircraft sank Mikuma the next day.
On the morning of 25 October 1944 his flag was in the battleship Yamato, off Samar. He had four battleships, six heavy cruisers, the light cruisers Noshiro and Yahagi, and eleven destroyers. Yamato was not sunk that day. Gambier Bay, Hoel, Johnston, and Samuel B. Roberts were sunk by the Japanese guns. The ships that hit them are not pinned down.
