The name is the Agano River. Agano was the lead ship of her class of light cruisers, built at Sasebo to lead destroyers. She was laid down on 18 June 1940, launched on 22 October 1941, and commissioned on 31 October 1942.
On the night of 1–2 November 1943 Rear Admiral Morikazu Osugi's flag was in her off Empress Augusta Bay. He was not her captain. Naganami, Hatsukaze, and Wakatsuki were with her. She was not sunk.
On that same night Myoko collided with Hatsukaze and cut off the destroyer's bow. American destroyers finished Hatsukaze. Not one of them is credited alone. Merrill's cruisers sank Sendai. That fire is not credited to one ship. Agano did not sink either of them.
A United States submarine sank her north of Truk on 16 February 1944. The submarine is not named. She was struck on 31 March 1944.
