Rear Admiral Morikazu Osugi had his flag in the light cruiser Agano at Empress Augusta Bay on 2 November 1943. With her were Naganami, Hatsukaze, and Wakatsuki. He was not Agano's captain.
Hatsukaze lost her bow in a collision with Myoko and was then finished by American destroyers. Agano was not sunk.
