Raid on Darwin
Darwin harbor, Northern Territory
On 19 February 1942 Japanese carrier aircraft bombed Darwin. The aircraft came from the force of Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, and Soryu, the carriers that had struck Pearl Harbor. Peary was in the harbor to fuel, after a convoy toward Timor had turned back. About five bombs hit her. She went down by the stern around 1300, and her machine guns were still firing as she sank. Lieutenant John Michael Bermingham was lost with her. The sinking is not credited to one carrier. The counts of her dead do not agree.
