USS Monssen (DD-436) was a Gleaves-class destroyer of the United States Navy. Roland Nesbit Smoot was her captain from 14 March 1941 until 28 October 1942. During Smoot's command she was at the Battle of Midway. On 4 June 1942 she escorted the oilers.

Charles Edward McCombs relieved Smoot on 28 October 1942 and remained captain through 13 November 1942.

Under McCombs she went into the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. In the night action of 13 November 1942 she was in the rear of Callaghan's column.

That night action ended her service. Monssen was sunk on 13 November 1942 off Guadalcanal, with McCombs still in command.
