Loss of Sazanami
About 300 miles southeast of Yap
On 14 January 1944 Sazanami and Akebono were meeting a tanker convoy coming up from Palau toward Truk. The submarine Albacore hit Sazanami with two torpedoes near 05°15′N, 141°15′E. She broke up and was gone in under three minutes. One hundred fifty-three men died, her captain Suga among them. Akebono took off the other 89.
