Battle of Surigao Strait
Surigao Strait, Leyte Gulf
Shigure was the last destroyer in Nishimura's column: two old battleships, Mogami, and three other destroyers. American destroyers and the battle line sank that force. Shigure took one shell hit and a spray of near misses that knocked out her gyro, radio, and steering. She was the only ship of the column still underway when the night ended. Mogami left the strait on fire. Aircraft stopped her. Akebono, from the following force, took off the crew and sank Mogami with one torpedo that afternoon. Admiral Shima's force, with Ushio, came in after Nishimura's ships had already been destroyed. Nachi collided with Mogami, and Shima turned back. Ushio came out.
