Yamashiro was a battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy. In the Battle of Surigao Strait she served as Nishimura's flagship.
Her captains in the years before that battle were recorded in succession. Chozaemon Obata took command on 24 May 1941. Noboru Owada followed him on 1 September 1942.
Yoshioki Tawara became captain on 25 December 1943. Katsukiyo Shinoda relieved Tawara on 6 May 1944 and was still in command when the ship was lost.
On 25 October 1944 Yamashiro fought in the Battle of Surigao Strait. The action left her sunk in the strait.
Guns and torpedoes finished her. The American destroyers and the battle line delivered the attack together, and the sinking is not credited to any one ship.
Shigure was the only ship of that force to escape. Yamashiro was sunk in Surigao Strait on 25 October 1944.
