USS West Virginia (BB-48) was a Colorado-class battleship of the United States Navy. Built at Newport News, she was launched on 19 November 1921 and commissioned on 1 December 1923.

On 7 December 1941, in the Attack on Pearl Harbor, torpedoes and a bomb sank her at her berth. The torpedoes and the bomb are not pinned to one plane. She was raised from that berth afterward.

The hull was repaired after she was raised, and she survived the war. Herbert Victor Wiley took command on 15 January 1944 and served as captain until 2 May 1945.

Wiley was in command at the Battle of Surigao Strait. On 25 October 1944 West Virginia opened the battleship fire. She arrived at Iwo Jima on the morning of 19 February 1945 and fired through 1 March.

On 1 April 1945 she was in the gunfire force at Okinawa and stayed afloat. Raymond Wilson Holsinger relieved Wiley on 2 May 1945 and held command until he was relieved on 17 January 1946. Sunk at her berth at Pearl Harbor, then raised and repaired, West Virginia survived the war.
