Shot and shell

sunk · gunHMS Electra
Electra went into the smoke behind Exeter, met three Japanese destroyers going the other way, and scored hits on the leader. A shell then hit her boiler room and stopped her. A Japanese destroyer came out of the smoke and shot her to pieces at close range. She sank about 1800. Japanese records name Asagumo. Modern accounts add Minegumo. ONI and the Gazette do not name the ship. ONI says only Electra was sunk by gunfire.
