Samidare was a Shiratsuyu-class destroyer. Uraga Dock Company launched her on 6 July 1935. She was commissioned in January 1937. Ten ships were built in the class. Shigure was one of them.
On the night of 13 November 1942 she was off Guadalcanal with Abe's force. A shell hit her in the bow and she withdrew. Helena had hit Amatsukaze and driven her out. Asagumo, Murasame, and Samidare then drew Helena's fire. Samidare was not sunk. The ships lost that night are not credited to her.
On the battleship night she took survivors off Kirishima after Washington wrecked the battleship. Teruzuki and Asagumo took men off as well. Samidare was not sunk.
On 6 October 1943 she and Shigure were covering the last Japanese troops leaving Vella Lavella. Three American destroyers attacked before their second division arrived. Yugumo was sunk. One of Yugumo's torpedoes wrecked Chevalier. That torpedo was not Samidare's. O'Bannon then collided with Chevalier. Selfridge was firing at Shigure and Samidare when a torpedo took her bow off. Which of the Japanese ships fired it is not known. Samidare was not sunk.
On the night of 1–2 November 1943 she was with Shigure and Shiratsuyu, ahead of Sendai, off Empress Augusta Bay. Captain Noboru Nakamura had her. She collided with Shiratsuyu and was damaged. She was not sunk. The American cruisers sank Sendai. That fire is not credited to one ship. Shigure was not hit.
On 26 August 1944, off Palau, American carrier aircraft and a submarine sank her. The loss is not credited to one ship.
