Bombardment of Midway
Off Sand Island, Midway
On the night of 7 December 1941, while the carriers were at Pearl Harbor, Sazanami and Ushio were the ships sent to shell Midway. They opened fire at 2135 from southwest of Sand Island and closed to the northeast. Sazanami fired 193 rounds. Four men were killed on Sand Island, and the installations there were hit. Then the two destroyers turned away to the southwest.
