USS McCawley (AP-10) was a transport of the United States Navy. Her wartime path in this account runs from the Guadalcanal landings in August 1942 to a new hull number early in 1943 and to her loss off Rendova that June.
On 7 August 1942 she took part in the landings on Guadalcanal and Tulagi. She was Turner's flagship off Beach Red that day, and Charlie P. McFeaters was in command of the ship while Turner's flag flew in her.
She served as Turner's flagship for those landings, with McFeaters holding command of the vessel itself. The flag marked Turner's place in her; the captain on 7 August was McFeaters.
On 1 February 1943 she was reclassified APA-4. The hull that had gone to the August landings as AP-10 carried that new designation from then on.
Off Rendova on 30 June 1943, an aircraft torpedo hit her engine room. She was abandoned after the blow.
Six American motor torpedo boats then torpedoed the abandoned ship and sank her. The loss belongs to those six boats together and is not credited to any one of them. USS McCawley went down off Rendova that day.
