Cleveland-class light cruiser, the name ship. New York Shipbuilding, Camden. Launched 1 November 1941, commissioned 15 June 1942, Captain Edmund W. Burrough. Twelve 6-inch guns. Captain Andrew G. Shepard had her by the summer of 1943. On the night of 1-2 November 1943 she was in Merrill's cruiser line at Empress Augusta Bay, with Montpelier, Columbia, and Denver. The cruisers sank Sendai. That fire is not credited to one of them. She was not sunk. Thirteen battle stars and a Navy Unit Commendation for that night. She came home and was sold for scrap on 18 February 1960.
