Dyson was a Fletcher-class destroyer, DD-572. Consolidated Steel at Orange laid her down on 25 June 1941, launched her on 15 April 1942, and commissioned her on 30 December 1942. Commander Roy Alexander Gano was her captain.
On the night of 1–2 November 1943 she was in Captain Arleigh A. Burke's van off Empress Augusta Bay. His flag was in Charles Ausburne. Stanly and Claxton were the other two ships with her. Merrill's cruisers, Montpelier, Cleveland, Columbia, and Denver, sank Sendai. That fire is not credited to one ship.
Myoko cut the bow off Hatsukaze, and American destroyers finished the wreck. Dyson was not one of the ships named for that fire. She was not hit, and she was not sunk.
She was decommissioned on 31 March 1947 and transferred to West Germany on 17 February 1960.
