John C. Butler was the name ship of her class of destroyer escorts, DE-339. Lieutenant Commander J. E. Pace had her off Samar. The portrait, taken in the Pacific on 1 March 1945, has 339 on the bow.
On 25 October 1944 she was in Taffy 3's screen. The other three escorts of her division were Dennis, Raymond, and Samuel B. Roberts. Roberts was sunk. John C. Butler was not. She got out with the carriers that lived.
She survived the war.
