USS Texas (BB-35) was a battleship of the United States Navy. She is identified by that hull number, and the command dates kept for her run from the spring of 1944 into August 1945.
On 1 April 1945 she was off Okinawa in the gunfire force. That place in the force is the combat assignment recorded for her: present with the ships tasked to deliver gunfire during the Okinawa operation. The same day records that she was not sunk.
Charles Adams Baker was her captain from 10 March 1944 until he was relieved on 17 August 1945. The April day off Okinawa falls inside that tour, so she stood in the gunfire force while he held command. He remained captain for months afterward, until his relief in August.
She came through that assignment afloat. The fate set down for the hull is plain: she was not sunk, and she survived the war.
On 17 August 1945, when Baker left the ship, Texas was still the battleship that had been in the gunfire force off Okinawa on the first of April. She had stayed afloat through that day, and survival is the end recorded for her wartime service.
